The PRAXIS II Art Making Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching art to students at all grade levels. The exam is composed of two sections assessing candidates' working knowledge of basic art concepts and techniques of art making, and documentation of personal art making. Sections contain activities and exercises designed to assess art-making knowledge and ability. Candidates have one hour to complete the exam.
The Working Knowledge of Basic Art Concepts and Techniques of Art Making section of the exam covers drawing and painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, crafts, art technology, and design elements. Candidates use tools, media and various techniques to describe the process of creating an art form, which may include creating a piece of art. Candidates have five minutes to complete each exercises, which is graded on a scale of 0-3. A score of 3 means the response demonstrates fluency terminology and the process of making art. A score of 0 is given to completely insufficient, inaccurate or blank responses.
The Documentation of Personal Art Making section of the exam asks candidates to provide color copies of four of their works of art in a variety of media. The candidates will discuss two of these in essays discussing the technique, thematic harmony or disharmony, steps taken from idea to completion, and the materials and equipment used for the artwork. Each essay is allotted 25 minutes.
Essays are scored on a scale of 0-5. A score of 5 is means the essay shows a high degree of competency in technique and effectively expresses meaning. A score of 0 is given to completely insufficient or blank essays.
