The PRAXIS II Education of Young Children Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching preschool through fifth grade. The exam is comprised of 60 multiple choice questions and six brief response questions covering child development and foundations; curriculum and Instruction; diversity and exceptional needs; supporting the learning environment; and relationships with families and communities. Candidates have two hours to complete the exam.
The Child Development and Foundations section of the exam covers the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas of child development.
The Curriculum and Instruction section of the exam covers program instruction theories, program instruction models, teaching strategies, procedures effectively applied the curriculum, mathematics, literacy, science, social studies, creative arts, physical education, and technology curriculums.
The Diversity and Exceptional Needs, and Supporting the Learning Environment section of the exam covers best practices in incorporating disabled students or students from other cultures into the classroom, the relevance of instruction to students' individual and unique life experiences, and establishing a classroom environment that is socially invigorating and developmentally suitable for students.
The Relationships with Families and Communities, and Professionalism section of the exam covers teacher-student, teacher-family, teacher-community, and teacher-peer relationships, strategies to encourage and support family involvement; school resources; and positive communication to satisfy the learning, social and emotional needs of the students.
