PRAXIS II English Language, Literature and Composition Content Knowledge Exam

The PRAXIS II English Language, Literature and Composition Content Knowledge Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching secondary school English. The exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions: 36 questions cover composition and rhetoric, 18 questions cover language and linguistics, and 66 questions cover reading and understanding text.

The Reading and Understanding Text section of the exam covers reading instruction; historical and cultural text interpretation; familiarity with central literary works and authors; recognition of patterns, forms and features of literature; recognition and analysis of figurative language and other literary devices; and summarizing, comparing, and interpreting a range of texts.

The Language and Linguistics section of the exam covers semantics; grammar, the history and evolution of the English language; theories of language acquisition; dialectical differences; and historical, social and cultural influences on and of language.

The Composition and Rhetoric section of the exam covers the structure, rhetorical strategies, and methods of writing; writing instruction; and student assessment.
