PRAXIS II German: Content Knowledge Exam

The PRAXIS II German: Content Knowledge Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching beginning-level German. The exam is composed of 120 multiple choice questions: 23 questions cover cultural perspectives, 31 questions cover interpretive reading, 34 questions cover grammatical accuracy, and 32 questions cover interpretive listening. Candidates have two hours to complete the exam.

The Cultural Perspectives section of the exam covers German lifestyles and culture, literature, the arts, geography, history, and contemporary issues. This portion of the test is in German.

The Interpretive Reading section of the exam covers implied and actual content and the structure of a German passage. Passages consider a range of topics and complexity, and may have literary, commercial, periodical or internet sources.

The Structure of the Language (Grammatical Accuracy) section of the exam presents recorded and written samples in German. Questions about these cover speech analysis (audio error identification and correction in pronunciation, grammar, false cognates, and slang), writing, and grammar. The exam covers vocabulary, morphology, language structure, textual error identification and correction in word choice, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation.

In the Interpretive Listening section of the exam, candidates listen to recordings of native German speakers in conversations or monologues of varying lengths. Questions cover comprehension of conversational German, cultural information, vocabulary and idioms, as well as phonemic discrimination
