PRAXIS II Mathematics: Content Knowledge Exam

The PRAXIS II Mathematics: Content Knowledge Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching secondary level mathematics. The exam is comprised of 50 multiple choice questions. A graphing calculator is required for this exam. Candidates have two hours to complete this exam.

The Use of Technology section of the exam covers the use of technology, problem solving and understanding mathematical ideas.

The Mathematical Representation section of the exam covers organizing, communicating, and recording mathematical ideas; solving problems; and interpreting social, physical, and mathematical phenomena.

The Mathematical Connections section of the exam covers the application of mathematical ideas across content areas.

The Mathematical Reasoning and Proof section of the exam covers development and evaluation of mathematical proofs and arguments, the investigation of mathematical conjectures, and the use of various methods of proof and types of reasoning.

The Mathematical Problem Solving section of the exam covers the application of problem-solving strategies, gaining mathematical knowledge through problem solving, and solving problems using mathematics in various subject areas.

The Discrete Mathematics section of the exam covers finite and infinite arithmetic and geometric sequences and series to model simple phenomena, problem solving in counting techniques, permutations, recursion, function values, and closed form expressions.

The Matrix Algebra section of the exam covers reflections, translations, dilations, and rotations of objects in the plane by utilizing matrices, vectors, coordinates and sketches, using matrix techniques to solve linear equations, reasoning the inverses of matrices with determinants, scalar multiply, subtract, and, multiplying matrices and vectors and finding inverses of matrices.

The Algebra Number Theory section of the exam covers problem solving in two- and three dimensions, using algebraic representations of spheres, conic sections, planes, lines, interpreting algebraic principles geometrically, solving and graphing equations and inequalities, and comparing and contrasting properties.
