PRAXIS II Music: Content Knowledge Exam

The PRAXIS II Music: Content Knowledge Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching music to students at any grade level. The exam is comprised of 135 multiple choice questions: 8 questions cover professional practices, 43 questions cover learning music in grades K-12; 28 questions cover performance, 28 questions cover music theory, and 28 questions cover music literature and history. The exam includes a 75 minute, non-listening section and a 45-minute listening section. Candidates have two hours to complete the exam.

The Professional Practices section of the exam covers professional practices and ethics, musical organizations for professional musicians, journals, literature, and other resources, and philosophies of music education.

The Learning of Music for grades K -12 section of the exam covers managing the classroom; classroom technology; student instrumental and vocal material selection; student assessment; active, affective, and psychomotor development; music concepts; and musical curriculum goals.

The Performance section of the exam covers errors in listening and performance, acoustics, rehearsal facilities, conducting, reading scores, synthesizers and electronic media, vocal production, and instruments.

The Music Theory section of the exam covers melody, rhythm, scales, chords, intervals, harmony, tempo, articulation, pitch, and compositional arrangement.
