PRAXIS II Physical Education: Content Knowledge Exam

The PRAXIS II Physical Education: Content Knowledge Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching physical education at all grade levels. The exam consists of 120 multiple choice questions: 16 questions cover health and safety, 10 questions cover biomechanics, 13 questions cover social science foundations, 23 questions cover fitness and exercise, 29 questions cover movement forms, and 29 questions cover motor development, motor learning, and fundamental movements. Candidates have two hours to complete the exam.

The Health and Safety section of the exam covers injury prevention, first aid, CPR, water safety, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), equipment and instruction liability, the interrelatedness of substance abuse and physical performance, Fitnessgram, Physical Best, the President's Challenge and other awards.

The Biomechanics section of the exam covers kicking, over-and-underhand throwing, torque, speed, summation of forces, center of gravity, friction, force, and mass.

The Social Science Foundations section of the exam covers the history of physical education, current philosophical positions, the psychological effects of physical fitness, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, affirmative action, and Title IX.

The Fitness and Exercise Science section of the exam covers the interrelatedness of fitness and nutrition, short and long term effects of exercise, human anatomy and physiology, bones, muscles, identification and purposes of bodily systems, physical conditioning, body composition and flexibility, muscular endurance, and the cardio-respiratory system.

The Movement Forms section of the exam covers injury prevention, forms of dance, gymnastics, games, individual and team sports, outdoor activities, martial arts, lifetime movement activities, volleyball, tennis, basketball, softball, soccer, swimming, and track and field.

The Functional Movements; Motor Learning and Motor Development section of the exam covers motor development, neurophysiology of motor control, motor patterns, the effects of gender difference and the environment on performance, moving through space, and manipulative, loco-motor, and non-loco-motor movements.
