The PRAXIS II Physics: Content Knowledge Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching secondary school physics. The exam consists of 50 multiple choice questions: 13 questions cover special topics in modern physics: optics and waves, 17 questions cover magnetism and electricity, and 20 questions cover mechanics. Candidates may not use calculators for this exam. Candidates have one hour to complete the exam.
The Special Topics in Modern Physics: Optics and Waves section of the exam covers modern physics, light, sound, and waves. Questions cover natural and non-natural radioactivity, binding energy, nuclear energy, relativity, black body radiation, photo electricity, Michelson-Morley experiment, de Broglie's hypotheses, particle wave duality, geometric optics, polarization, features of sound wave, air strings and columns, the electromagnetic spectrum, longitudinal and transverse wave characteristics, inference and super position of waves, standing waves, dispersion, diffraction, resonance, frequencies, the Doppler effect, scattering, transmission, wave absorption, Snell's law, refraction and reflection, and the frequency, speed, amplitude and length of waves.
The Magnetism and Electricity section of the exam covers magnetism and motors, transformers, Lorenz force law, Lenz and Faraday's electromagnetic induction laws, Ampere and Biot-Savart's law, magnetic flux, force and fields, electrical fields and forces, potential electrical energy, Gauss's law, Coulomb's law, insulators, semiconductors and conductors, series and parallel circuits, generators and batteries, capacitance, resistance, current, potential difference, and resistance.
The Mechanics area of the exam covers dynamics and vectors. Dynamics questions covers Newton's laws of gravity and motion, friction, elastic and inelastic collisions, rigid body motion, conservation laws of momentum and energy, momentum and impulse principles, potential energy and conservative forces, harmonica motion, springs and oscillations, mass versus weight, statistics. Vector questions cover periodic motion, reference frames, relative velocity, circular motion, projectile motion, and straight-line motion.
