PRAXIS II Principles of Learning and Teaching: Early Childhood Exam

The Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching: Early Childhood Exam is comprised of two sections. The first section includes four study sets composed of a case study followed by three short answer problems. Each case study covers an aspect of teaching or learning, and is designed to demonstrate understanding of teaching forms can take, implementing teaching styles and techniques, and procedures required by a variety of teaching approaches. The exam is comprised of 24 multiple-choice questions in two units of 12 questions each. Candidates have two hours to complete the exam.

The narrative sets are presented in four areas: Students as Learners, Instruction and Assessment, Communication Techniques, and Profession and Community.

The Students as Learners section covers theories of learning and of human development, variations in learning styles, legal and ethical aspects regarding diversity, classroom management and techniques to encourage student motivation. The section is 33% of the total exam score.

The Instruction and Assessment section covers teaching methods and learning styles, strategic approaches to creating lesson plan, student assessment, teaching assessment, and grading. This section is 33% of the total exam score.

The Communication Techniques section covers verbal and nonverbal approaches encouraging classroom learning, participation, and comprehension. The section is 22% of the total exam score.

The Profession and Community section covers available educator resources, and the responsibilities of educators outside the classroom. This section is 11% of the exam score.

The narrative sets of the exam are scored 0 to 2. A score of 2 means the response demonstrates exceptional comprehension of theories and strategies. A score of 1 means the response only answers part of the question and demonstrates 'a fair degree of understanding. A score of 0 means the response misinterprets or misapplies the theories or essential characteristics of the narrative.
