PRAXIS II Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 5-9 Exam

The PRAXIS II Principles of Learning and Teaching: Grades 5-9 Exam is composed of two segments. Four narrative case studies followed by brief questions complete the first section. The second section includes 24multiple choice questions. Candidates have 25 minutes to complete each case study set and 20 minutes to complete the multiple choice questions.

The case studies section of the exam offers four narratives followed by three brief questions. These cover teaching and learning methodologies, strategies and implementation. The case studies cover Students as Learners; Instruction and Assessment; Communication Techniques; and Profession and Community. The Students as Learners section covers philosophies of learning and human development; learning styles and disabilities; classroom environment and management; and issues of motivation. The Instruction and Assessment section covers teaching methodologies for various learner types; teaching materials; lesson plans; and assessment and grading. The Communication Techniques section of the exam covers verbal and nonverbal communication in classroom participation and learning. The Profession and Community section covers awareness of educator resources and the role of educators outside the classroom.

The Students as Learners and the Instruction and Assessments sections of the exam are weighted at 33% each of the total score. Teacher Professionalism weighs 22%, and Communication Techniques contributes 11%.

The case study questions of the exam are scored on a scale of 0 to 2 A 2 is scored for thoughtful responses demonstrating outstanding competency and a 0 is scored for a blank question or one that has been completely misinterpreted.
