PRAXIS II Special-Education: Knowledge Based Core Principles Exam
The Praxis II Special Education: Knowledge Based Core Principles Exam is taken by candidates interested in focusing on special education at all grade levels. This exam has 60 multiple-choice questions: 37 questions cover service delivery for disabled students, 15 cover exceptional students; 8 cover social and legal issues impacting special education programs. Candidates have one hour to complete the exam.
The Service Delivery for Disabled Students section of the exam cover behavioral; medical; cognitive; sociological, and psychodynamic issues; professional organizations and associations; research and literature; learning environments; student services; participation on multidisciplinary teams; teacher-parent collaboration; external agencies; standardized and specialized assessments; creating and evaluating formal and informal assessments; developing IEPs; evaluating instruction; writing reports; dialogue concerning student development; and modifying instruction based on assessment outcomes.
The Society and Legal Issues section of the exam covers influences from cultural and community; how people with disabilities are viewed by others; familial involvement; self advocacy; teacher advocacy, important legal cases and federal laws concerning special education, legal cases to include Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504, and IDEA 2004.
The Understanding Exceptional Students section of the exam covers basic special education theories and concepts (to include IDEA classification; labels applied to special education students; possible causes of disabilities; prevention of disabilities; intensity, extent, rate of recurrence of behaviors associated with key disabilities); characteristic behaviors of disabled students (to include psychological, educational, medical, physical, and social behaviors that exemplify disabled students); and theories regarding human development (to include sensory, motor, cognitive, linguistic, physical, social, and emotional concepts).
