The PRAXIS II Theatre Exam is taken by candidates interested in teaching theatre to elementary or secondary students. The exam contains 100 multiple choice questions: 16 questions about Creative Drama, 10 questions about Professional Knowledge and Instruction, 15 questions about Production, 19 questions about Technical and Design Aspects, 21 questions about Performance, and 19 questions about Literature, History and Theory. Candidates have two hours to complete the exam.
The Creative Drama section of the exam focuses on dramatic play, emotional and sensory perceptions, masks, puppetry, clowning, rhythm, movement, theatre games, children's literature, dramatization, and aesthetic judgments.
The Professional Knowledge and Instruction section of the exam assesses understanding of funding and community resources, freedom of expression, censorship, employment, counseling, resume preparation, and professional organizations. This area of the exam also covers legal and ethical obligations.
The Production section of the exam contains questions about selecting a particular play for the community, scheduling and season planning, publicity, stage and box office management. Issues such as liability, safety, and maintenance of equipment are also addressed in this portion of the exam.
The Technical and Design Aspects section of the exam assesses knowledge of sound, scenery, props, lighting, and costumes. Technical and artistic elements of the theatre are assessed in this part of the exam.
The Performance section of the exam includes questions about auditions, casting, script analysis, rehearsal, and theatre terminology. This section also contains questions about emotional and sensory expression, character analysis and development, voice, dialects, breathing, anatomy and physiology, sensory and emotional development, ensemble acting, concentration and discipline.
The Literature, History and Theory section of assesses knowledge of the history of the theatre, ethnic theatre, representative plays, authors and genres, theatre and society, performance architecture, and the impacts theatre and society have on each other. This section of the exam covers the era from 1945 to the present, the modern era from nineteenth century to 1945, romanticism, the eighteenth century and restoration, the neoclassical period, the Elizabethan period, the Renaissance period, the medieval period, the Roman and Greek periods, authors and genres during these times, and the socio-cultural influence of literature.
